Battery Energy Storage System

BESS

BASIC Expert wrote a report to demonstrate the residual risk of fire spread and damage to the BESS units and existing infrastructure is reduced so far as is reasonably practical. The report demonstrated the construction of a shield wall, the installation of water supply pipework for the in-built sprinkler system and associated drainage, and improved brigade access. These enhancements work to mitigate the fire risk and ensure a higher level of safety.

SCOOTER IN APARTMENT FIRE

An apartment fire caused by a lithium-ion battery explosion caused a partial collapse of a sole occupancy unit bounding wall. We conducted an expert report on the battery which was found to be a commercially available device without modification.

Dr. Jonathan Barnett presented to the Suncorp Group/Vero of Underwriting Management on the topic of Risk and Fire Safety associated with Battery Electric Vehicles. This becomes an emerging risk as the general public adopts to purchase an EV, so understanding the unique fire risks that these vehicles pose is increasingly important for insurance underwriters and risk management professionals.

Further, BASIC Expert’s relationship with insurance companies such as CHU, Chubb, and the Suncorp Group/Vero is strengthened through these expert presentations. By sharing valuable knowledge and industry-specific insights, BASIC Expert is to collaborate for stakeholder advice from the underwriters and ensure that our recommendations are not only backed by developments in fire safety but are also aligned with the needs and concerns of our insurance partners, ultimately enhancing the quality and relevance of our consulting services.

Victoria Big Battery fire

Bill Gleeson presented to the members of the Forensic Engineering Society of Australia, following the Tesla Megapack lithium-ion battery fire in Geelong on 30 June 2021. As Bill worked on this project and was a seasoned fire fighter prior to his career in fire safety engineering his presentation allowed for a unique insight into the case study, highlighting the potential risks associated with large-scale battery installations.

His presentation encompassed a comprehensive examination of the site, available data, and collaboration with relevant stakeholders to piece together the sequence of events that led to the fire, while explaining the operational mechanisms of the Tesla Megapacks and batteries in general.
