Dr Brian Ashe is an internationally acclaimed technical expert in fire safety engineering and building regulations with thirty years’ experience in his field. Previously a Director at Australian Building Codes Board (ABCB) in Australia, Brian developed the Performance-based National Construction Code in the areas of fire safety, structural safety, resilience to climate change and sustainability. He has an extensive international presentation and publication list.

Brian has twelve years’ experience working on projects within the UK regulatory regime (selected examples):

• Peer reviewer: Fire Risk Assessment of External Walls (FRAEW) using the PAS 9980 methodology (various buildings).

• Authorising Engineer (Fire) for a new private hospital in London.

• Associate Engineer, Ascot Racecourse Redevelopment. Managed the development of the Operational Fire Safety Plan to ensure Safety Certification.

• Project Engineer; Nicholas Grimshaw and Partners, UK.  Fire strategy and fire engineering for the re-development of Paddington station.

Brian has done projects throughout the world including the UK, Europe, Australia, UAE, PR China and Singapore. Brian is a chartered professional engineer who has designed numerous commercial, residential, special purpose buildings and infrastructure.   Clients include Eurotunnel, MAGNOX, HSE (UK), European Commission, CERN, MTRC, LTA Singapore, OECD and Adidas.

Brian has advised Australian Government Departments and Officials to the highest level on matters relating to fire safety, building safety and in response to natural disasters and man-made events. Brian’s work was instrumental in the Australian Government’s response to 9/11, the Childers fire, Lacrosse fire, Grenfell fire and the Canberra and Victorian bushfires. Brian has also advised the Governments of Japan, Scotland, New Zealand, Hong Kong, and England on the regulation of building and fire safety.

Today he is the Managing Director of BASIC Expert UK LLP, a specialist forensic engineering and fire engineering firm; focusing on helping people with non-compliant buildings deal with dangerous cladding, inappropriate Essential Safety Measures (fire alarm and detection systems, fire rated doors and the like), and helping them with building rectifications from design, to permits, to construction and through the legal quagmire of litigation.
